Default I Heard My First Dart Frog Call!

I have been keeping dart frogs for several years, mostly D. tinc azureus and more recently a pair of green&black D. auratus. What got me started in the leaf business was a want ad for large quantities of Magnolia leaves. The up shot is that I traded about 40 cubic ft of leaves for four sub-adult Intermedius. I could never have afforded them and I am absolutely stunned by them.

Anyway, I've never once heard my azureus or auratus males calling. I did see the azureus male "call" once but didn't hear it.

Tonight one of the Imitators started to call and it was soooo cool. It was faint and I only heard it because I was sitting close to the viv, but I managed to ID the little guy. So, I know I have at least one male.

It's the little things that make me love this hobby so much.

Wow Jim, how thick is the glass on your terrariums? I've a room full of imitators and you can hear them anywhere on the ground floor. Hearing tincs is almost a talent though. I heard my first call about 2 months ago and I thought it was an electrical fault...

The Imitators are in a 27-gal hex with 1/4-inch glass. It's not real quiet around our place either (four teenage boys - usually with a couple extra hanging around), but now that I know what to listen for I should hear them more.

We have a couple of cricket frogs and when they first started calling, I thought the old Coralife light fixture fan was squeeking. Duh.

After listening to the recordings available, I guess I expected them to be a lot louder.

    Hi Jim

My bet is they will get louder with age. Our Leucs are way louder than when they first started calling.

Thats so cool. I have all kinds of frogs calling, trouble is when I go to look to see who is making all the noise, they shut up.

I have a orchestra going on in my frog room, seems like a competition on who can be the loudest. The louder they are the more I like them!

That's awesome. As I'm typing this my A.moreletii are talking to me. I love hearing my frogs.
