Non-toxic play sand for frog tank?

Hey everyone!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a box of play sand for my Cynops Orientalis (Chinese fire belly newt) tank. It has been great so far, no problems. I figured since I have a lot left over, why not use it in my Golden bell frog tank?

I have a great setup in mind. Semi aquatic tank, couple of inches of water, sand, java moss and duckweed. I read on wikipedia (Only good source of Golden bell frog information hehe) that Litoria Aurea are mostly aquatic so I thought why not.

Hmm, Im not sure Zac. Ive never used sand before. Im not sure if the salt in the sand would be OK. You may have to soak it or something to get salt out. Im sure someone here will know.

I think the sand should be fine but I don't think tree frogs encounter it much on land - I wouldn't use it in their terrarium, personally. If you're using it in the water section, get some test kits and test the water after a few days of it being in there, just to be sure. I recommend the sand people use in pool filters over other sands, but play sand is usually fine.

I’m not using sand either – but why not?
I’m probably just a “frightened mother-frog”

Anyway testing the water after a few days like John Clare says would not be a bad idea.
