I just got a 40 watt prorep red night spot lamp but the shop did not have the correct fitting just wondering what size fitting i need and also they had no thermostats is there a certain type i need with a 40 watt spot lamp?
I'm not sure what you mean by fitting. Thermostat needs to be in the tank a couple of inches off the substrate and preferable a digital.
Just put it in a dome? You don't need a thermostat, but if you go for one, a dimming day/night type. If the bulb is to hot you can dim it down by just a standard plug dimmer.
You can find the dimmer at Walmart or home depot for roughly around 8-10 bucks.
Thanks ill buy a dome and a dimmer, just got an exo terra thermometer and a seperate hygrometer and im not 100% on how to get the most accurate reading I have the hygrometer sensor a bit more than an inch above the substrate at the back of the enclosure on the cool side because that's the side the frog is always on and that says 88 but the frog is closer to the heat now so im worried it could be even higher there...
I have the thermometer sensor im the middle.of the enclosure under the substrate because thats where the frog is now and thats 80
Any suggestions would be appreciated
It's best to put the thermometer directly under the heat source just to make that's not too hot there and for the hygrometer, I've found those ones to be innacurate and you don't need one anyway. Horned frogs are from arid places so are able to estivate in dry conditions and breed in wet, so are quite adaptable with humidity. A good rule is too simply keep the substrate not wet or dry but moist
Thanks I haven't got the overhead heating set up yet ill just keep the thermometer probe below the substrate as close t the frog as I can
The rule for substrate that most horned frog keepers follow is if you pick up the substrate and squeeze it you want it to clump together in your hand but not have water dripping of it. This is a great way to gauge the moist but not to wet that Jason mentioned, hopes this helps abit.
