American Toads-- solitary or communal?

I'm aware that American toads are generally solitary in the wild, but what would they prefer in captivity? I currently have two toads in a ten gallon. Tomorrow, I'm buying a 20 long. Would one toad be happier getting a whole 20l to himself, or should I keep the pair? I know they tolerate eachother, but does the presence of another toad add to stress? Conversely, if u were to just keep one by itself, would it be lonely never again seeing a member of its own species? Any experience on the subject would be appreciated.

Personally I've noticed my toads have had a stronger feeding response when kept together as opposed to being kept alone, and are less prone to shyness. I have a big flat rock I drop their food on and when the more confident toad sits on the rock for dinner the 2 less confident ones will see/hear her eating and hop over to see whats up. So while I don't think they're 'friends' they do seem to have unique interactions when kept together as opposed to when they were all kept separate.

Thanks for the response! In that case, I think I'll keep both. They're certainly aware of eachothers' presence. They often burrow right next to eachother, even though it's a pretty big tank. One funny thing I've noticed is that when I take one out and put her next to the tank/let her walk around a bit, the other one will act very concerned/interested and follow her along the side. Almost as if she's confused as to why the other toad isn't in the tank with her. I'm starting to think that I've got one Fowler's toad and one American toad, although they get along just fine so that's okay.
