Hello Angela, what species is your frog? A picture would help also.
Well, it depends on the type of frog, but if it starts calling, you can be sure it's a male.

About 15 years ago our oldest boys were 3-4 yrs old and wanted to go frog collecting. So, we went out after a rain and caught about six tree frogs. However, we found them by following the croaking, duh! I put them in a spare aquarium just outside our bedroom and at about 3 am I thought several had escaped and perched on my ear. After much fumbling with a flashlight and jar, and a stubbed toe, I managed to catch and release them all. We've kept only female tree frogs since. We do have a couple of male cricket frogs, but their calls are nice and peaceful.
