    Smile Hello! New to frogs

Hi. I don't even have any frogs yet but I'm wanting to get some fire bellies soon. We went camping recently and my 7 year old and 5 year old spent the entire trip catching (and releasing) frogs. They love frogs so much that they've started asking if they could keep pet frogs. So I've done some research and talked to my kids about looking but not touching and I'm excited about hopefully getting some new pets soon. Of course I know that they'll be my responsibility!

So anyway, I'm just trying to make sure I know what I'm doing before jumping in. If anyone has any helpful
links or advice, that'd be great! My biggest concern now is making sure I have the correct habitat. I'm seeing lots of really nice pictures but not a lot of tutorials on how to make one like the picture... Or how to properly clean it!

    Hey

Fire-bellies are great toads, will be active during the day unlike most but also active at night, but take care where placing their tank as they usually try to mate with each other at night and can be quite noisy. It's best to still keep them in groups though, as they are quite communal. My best advice would be to buy a couple books that provide essential in depth information, though forums are also excellent sources of additional info. I think Amphibians in Captivity by Marc Staniszewski is one of the most enjoyable and informative amphibian book I have and the author is very experienced with Bombina, however it is quite expensive and dated. He has also written an online care sheet which is great: http://www.amphibian.co.uk/bombina.html Other useful books would be Frogs and Toads by Devin Edmonds and Popular Amphibians by Philippe de Vosjoli. The Arcadia Guide to Reptile and Amphibian Nutrition written by John-Courtney Smith is very good with helping understand how to properly feed herps, which are less forgiving to unhealthy diets than us. It's worth mentioning that many books or care sheets you will find say that fire-bellied toads do not need UVB, but this is outdated and it has proven to be beneficial. UVB is important for bone development, physical and possibly mental health also. Hope this helps
