Three of the best beginner species of snakes i enjoyed working with were Ball pythons, Corn snakes, and garter snakes. Ball pythons will average out at around 3 feet for a male and females will get larger occasionally reaching 5 feet. Corn snakes will get to be around the same size (just smaller in diameter) and garter snakes will max out at 1.5-3 feet depending on the species or gender. In regards to cage size, an adult male ball python will be comfortable in a 20 gallon long at the absolute minimum (the same goes for corn snakes and garter snakes) all can be fed rodents but garter snakes may need fish or worm scenting. Its all worth it in the end!

We're is a good place online to get snakes and food. I live rural and the closest city doesn't have much for exotic pet owners.

From my experience there is no difference in temperment based on gender (but all snakes have their own personality). Ball pythons are a very calm mellow snake that are nocturnal. They are famous for being known as 'pet rocks". Corn snakes are more active than ball pythons and can occassionally be fast at times, but they will calm down if you handle them slowly. Tree pythons are typically not very good beginner snakes unless you know what you are doing. They usually don't like being handled and can be very nippy sometimes. from what i know the best place to buy snakes and feeders online is http://www.lllreptile.com/.

If you're looking for beginner species, I recommend Rough greens, Dekay's brown, Ring-neck snakes, or Rosy boas/Rubber boas. All are extremely tame, and most except for the last two, are insect eaters. If you truly can deal with mice, get the Rosy/Rubber boas. If not, then those insectivorous species may be just for you
