If you are going to use a UTH in a water area I would place it as mentioned under the tank to the glass and then put the tub over that spot. If its just straight glass and the UTH I think when doing water changes if that water isn't remotely close to the same temp and is colder pouring right over the matt and glass my cause a crack. But I would agree with a thermostat and if its done properly it should work.
