Thread: Concept

If he doesn't have the skink, then I'm not sure he even needs the sump. The research I briefly did shows the fish water being pumped directly up to the aquaponics tank and that providing the only filtration. Though depending on the method used there may be a need for at least a cannister filter.

I'd have to agree with DC. Putting any land based animal into the loop has the potential for bacterial growth to find its way to the food and would be virtually impossible to detect until you are at the ER with sepsis.

Mechanically, it can be done...but is it worth it? Seems you could safely do fish and plants and keep the skink separate.

I would agree that the sump isn't necessary, but.....

    Sumps are just cool!! Lol

+1.. but i'm wondering if there isn't anything that can be added to the sump to neutralize potential bad bacteria coming from the skink... OP mentioned carbon but I'm not certain it would be enough. Maybe a serious UV sterilizer?

I don't know if you guys have done fish tanks. My background is in fish tanks and if you have really good Bactria culture you have a Heathy tank. I know someone who ran their tank on just and though gravel filter for years (without water changes and it was a super healthy tank. I'm wondering if this would even be enough. Or even a hybrid of a carbon filter uv and a really good bacteria growth area.

I've got a relatively strong (30+ years) in aquariums. carbon will remove impurities and some toxins from the water. The bio filter will break down those as well. As far as bacteria and microbes that could get you seriously ill, like e-coli or salmonella, those just won't cut it. Not saying that either of those would be transmitted by a skink, because I am not 100% sure, but I know those two won't kill them off. Uv sterilization might. It's very effective at killing certain microbes.

I'll be honest, I think you need to find a lizard forum and ask around to see if anyone knows what they may or may not emit from their poo.

Cool man that's a good idea... If not I'm prepared to but them on different systems.
