Substrates usually differ by the owner's taste. Gravel can be used but will have to be larger than the dwarf frog's head. Sand can also be used but feeding will have to be closely monitored to ensure no impaction occurs (so he doesn't swallow sand) or they can go without substrate at all making cleaning easier.
