I have fire bellied toads, and I find that covering the substrate with moss helps prevent substrate from getting in the frogs water. The problem is that my local pet store only sells sphagnum moss, which poses impaction risk. would it be safe to collect and use wild moss? I know not to use moss with long fibers because of impaction risk, but are any species of short fibered moss toxic/likely to carry disease/unsafe? How do I make sure the moss doesn't bring any diseases or bugs into the vivarium?
Its a process... all our moss is native. Rinse it, 10:1 bleach it, dry, repeat if paranoid, rinse and add to your tank. We harvest ours keeping a thin layer of soil on the bottom side. The moss will be dingy looking for a week or so from the bleaching. Its that time of year, so ours is finally browning a little. But its been in there 2 years strong now. We can take a good pic in the morning when its lights on time.
How do I make sure that the moss doesn't get any traces of bleach into the frog tank?
Rinsing the moss thoroughly after bleaching ensures that no bleach gets into the vivarium. Have you considered ordering terrestrial, or semi aquatic moss online?
