Hello everybody,
We need some help.
Quick story about what we have……a few months ago we bought our kid a plastic adventurer set that came with a voucher to get 2 tadpoles in the mail. We were told they are grass frogs.
After receiving the tadpoles we decided that the plastic frog set up was just not adequate for the tadpoles, so we bought a 20 gal Long aquarium, went to a river and picked up some small rocks and put some on the bottom of the tank, on 1/3 of the aquarium we set up kind of a stepping stone set up that goes above water and some real moss on the rocks that are above water…..we also added a filter to the other end of the tank.
We put both tadpoles in it and they seem to be doing fine. Here is where the novice issues begin. One of the tadpoles (froglet) lost the tail maybe in the last 4 or 5 days…..the other tadpole only has his back legs.
We noticed the older frog hiding in the rock work and breathing out of the water, I went ahead and bought him some flightless fruit flies, however he still hasn’t been on top of the rocks where I can put the flies.
Last night I noticed the older one in the middle of the tank kind of like in a motionless position but fully underwater, I actually though he was dead but when I put the flashlight on him he swam really fast to hide in the rock work…..does this mean that he is still not ready to live in dry land?
Because of the set up that I have where he can hide very good and the fact that he may starve if he is too shy and doesn’t want to come on top of the rocks to feed, would it be safer (or should I) take him out of that tank and put him in a small tank with just wet paper towels and a bowl of water? Is he ready to be in dirt or just keep in wet paper towels and if so for how long?
Here is a quick drawing of what our tank looks like.
My kid has grown to love the process and the frogs and I would hate to lose them now, thanks for all the help and input you can give us.
