Thread: Is my leopard frog hibernating?

Default Is my leopard frog hibernating?

I caught a northern leopard frog yesterday, and it's currently starting to get cold here in MN. I tried feeding it an earthworm and it swallowed it in one gulp
so I don't think he's stressed out. But he keeps freezing. He just sits in a corner and stares without moving his throat thing. But if I move him around gently he starts moving again but then doing the same thing again. Is this a sign of hibernation? I fed him a cricket he ate it without a problem, he was acting pretty healthy the day I got him. If my frog is hibernating what am I supposed to do?

If he is hibernating, supply him a large amount of dirt, leaves, logs, and other cover items to go underneath. Also, have a water dish until he actually goes into hibernation, and don't feed him, let his remaining food in his digestive system digest, so I doesn't rot inside of him. Once he goes into hibernation, lower his temperatures into the 50-45 degree mark

How am I supposed to know if he is going to hibernate? he currently still moves around.

He should not hibernate if he's being kept inside the house. If your tank temps have gone down, he will slow down, but not hibernate. Here is a care sheet for you to read through and make sure your husbandry is correct and there is no issue causing him to be lethargic - http://www.frogforum.net/content.php...ocephala-(1886)

Not exactly a shock that a frog that was recently captured, and removed from it's habitat to freak out for a day or so until it realizes it's not going anywhere. The frog is stressed and it's behavior won't necessarily be predictable. Poking at it doesn't help. Just give the frog some time to acclimate and it should be fine. Remember, they aren't exactly 'active' animals and you'll probably find it acting like a statue quite often.

I missed the whole "I caught it yesterday." That's what I get for speed reading. Yes, he's going to be highly stressed right now.
