Someone I know has a "Grow a Frog" kit. I tested the ammonia level of the tank because the tadpole would just float, and float, and the water smelled like garbage. The ammonia was at 8.0ppm. I did a 50% water change and it came down to 4.0ppm. Last night it started coughing out this blue fuzzy stuff, now its coming out of its gills too. I changed the rest of the water this morning, 100% and cleaned all the rotten gunk out of the sand.
Its got blue fuzz coming out of its gills and I can see its belly is bloated with gas and with the blue gunk. The sand that came with the kit is blue, and i assumed its just coloring leeching into the water, but the fuzzy junk is really worrying me. I cant find an answer anywhere. Please help so I can save it before its too late.
it sounds like it has an infection of some sort. could be ranavirus, could be some bacterial infection. the former is very common. most species are not super susceptible but unfavorable conditions/stress (high ammonia) will make it lethal
Remove all of the sand and water and start new. Rinse out the container. Scoop him up with a little cup and move him into the container with new dechlorinated water. Don't worry about any rocks or substrate.
Do you have any photos?
What species of frog is it?

Its a leopard frog. It was dead this morning, I guess it was just too late. The person that brought it to my house didnt trust me when I told them about the 8.0ppm ammonia levels, and the need for a water change. When I told them that their tad was ill, they just said "No, its fine you just gotta shake the tank." "See its moving now!" They insisted that it wasn't sick, and thought I was going to kill it by changing the water and adding a beneficial bacteria starter culture.
I just don't get it, your tadpole is floating motionless in toxic water, with clumps of fuzzy gunk coming out of it and you don't think its sick? And its my fault your tadpole died?
I'm sorry this has been eating at me all day.
I also followed all the proper steps for a water change, I used spring water and tested the ph to make sure they matched before I added/replaced more water.
Awe. That's so sad. I'm sorry.

They're getting another one, I hope the same thing doesn't happen. Some people never learn.
it sounds like your tadpole might have had a fungal infection. They sell stuff to treat that in fish, not sure it would work on a frog, esp since tadpoles are pretty fragile. Stress from ammonia was probably the reason it got infected.![]()
