Substrate when does it go bad?

I'm using Eco-Earth. Do you guys know when the substrate goes bad? Smell? appearance? Help me out please!

Smell is a good indicator but what kind of substrate are we talking about here?

Oh sorry, I use Eco-Earth loose coconut fiber

coco-fiber, just trust your nose and eyes. If you are in doubt I would change it. In my personal experience though, it has lasted awhile before needing a change.

I change mine out completely once a month. It will start to smell sour if you let it go much longer than that. Regular organic soil lasts much longer from what I hear around these parts

Where can i get organic soil? And Is that better suggested than cocofiber?
