Hey, I need some moss for my fire bellied toad vivarium that I am going to get. Where to get and what kind??
Simple: a thick layer of moist substrate ie coconut fiber. Live moss or sphagnum moss can be used of which will also help keep the humidity higher. This kind of set up needs a very large, shallow water dish ; one that has room for each toad to be comfy. Alway be careful anytime sphagnum is used as it can cause a choking hazard if accidentally swallowed. The water dish should be changed daily and have de-chlorinated water in it at all times.
High maintenance: fill the entire tank w/ shallow water, and aquarium gravel on the bottom. The gravel can be gradually sloped for the toads to get out on to a small land area. The land area can have coconut fiber ( or ABG) and live tropical moss and a small plant that grows well in a marginal area ( one that likes its roots wet) A flat stone or pc of cork can be used to maintain the slope of the bank. This type of set up requires additional maintenance including filtering.
Divided: Tank where the water and soil area were completely separated; of which prevents the tanis from 'coloring the water'. This can be done by dividing the the bottom of the tank ( ie plexi and silicone). A filter can be used to keep the water clean. A sprig of pothos will grow/ overlap the water and soil areas. Regular ABG can be used . Live tropical moss will grow nicely on the soil side of which needs a 'traditional layered bottom' like all vivariums. A stone or 'way out' of the water needs to be created on the water side.
I believe both NEHerp and Black Jungle have live tropical moss.
