Hey everyone my pixie is always buried underground. Day and night , I was reading around about why that could be the case and some people were saying his substrate could be to dry and he was gunna estivate so I did a complete change to his substrate and made it more moist then it previously was. But still no luck. I know they aren't gunna be hopping around 24/7 but I think this is alittle much. Any help would be appreciated
Mine likes to do this too. At first I was always worried but then I just got used to it. Usually after she eats she'll soak then go underground for a few days especially if the substrate is really wet she'll like it better then.
How old is your pixie?
Yeah same , right after a meal soak and then underground.. And I got it from a pet store and it was maybe a month. Thats my guess . So now it's about 2 and a half months. Still to young to tell wether or not it's male or female.
Also is it normal for them to bask ? I keep my warm side pretty hot at 85 , 90 and he will lay under the light and close to the heat pad for hours.
In my very limited experience raising one I found that keeping the substrate just deep enough for them to dig a hole their body depth or a little less is a good compromise. As long the temps, RH, feeding, and the substrate is nice and damp (not wet) this is enough substrate in my opinion. Then you get to see your frog!
As far as how wet the substrate should be you should be able to grab a handful and squeeze just a few drops of water. Less is to dry, more is too wet...
Is your GABF an adult or a baby ?
This is typical behaviour for GABF.
In Nature, they are burried several months per year during the dry season.
They only go out during rain season for breeding and eating.
My former female was burried 10 months per year, and she had no health problems.
It is a baby .. Just about 3 inches . did you keep your substrate wet or let it dry out for her to burrow down like that ?
No, care conditions equal all the year (Wet substrate).
But for a baby, you should put a level of substrate si that she can't burrow.
She has to eat a lot.
When she is adult, then provide enough substrate so that she can burrow when she wants, even during 10 months.
Okay, thank you guys for all the help
