    Default Fogger question

Is it alright to use a fogger with distilled water? Read somewhere that it's bad for a red eyed tree frog? Any info would be great, thanks!

We use treated tap. Gotta let it sit 24hrs though to get rid of the chlorine.

Technically ionized is the best kind to use. Distilled is the same as letting tap water sit a few days or so. Ionized is filtered far better and leaves no nasty deposits on the glass... Distilled still has chloraminites and whatnot in it.

Sorry to interject, but, distilled does not have chloramines in it. In fact, it is the best water to use in a mister or fogger because it is devoid of any impurities. No minerals, no chemicals. Reverse osmosis would be next on the list as far as least amount of impurities goes. Then spring water, then tap.

Chloramines are added during the chemical treatment process in many municipalities. Chloramines cannot be off gassed like chlorine can. It needs to be chemically removed. You can check if your municipality uses chloramines online. But in reality, it's just safer to treat any water that comes out of the tap with water conditioner. Then you never need to worry.

I personally disagree, distilled is best used for a fogger/misting because it doesn't leave hard water stains on glass. You should use tap treated with conditioner or bottled spring water in my opinion for soaking. Distilled water is also much more "pure" than tap water that has sat in the water for a day. Deionized is the purest form of water and is the best, but the best can get easily is probably just distilled water. If you have any evidence that supports that tap water that has been sitting in the sun for a day is the same as distilled I will gladly change my opinion

EDIT: I was typing my post before Bill posted his, sorry to copy you Bill!

I did see the first link, I disagree with the second link as well. Drinking water isn't just filtered tap water, it is usually spring water which doesn't have any of the added junk like chlorine and chloramines. Distilled water and R/O are also different as Bill stated before. One other thing I noticed is the age of that article, some of the original content is from 1997 by Frank Indiviglio, don't get me wrong as Frank is an awesome guy... I just feel that some of the information on that article is outdated a bit.

    Default Fogger question

The first link is good. The second link, I agree, is dated. Only frank's info on caudatas is referenced, the body is not his work. That being said, you do have to take into account both the age and the context of that second article. As far as age, yes, back in '01, there was some bottled water labeled as 'drinking water', which was basically what the survivalist nuts were stocking up on before Y2K. It was essentially purposes as potable water. As far as context, you would never want to keep an aquatic species, like the Many Caudata species and some aquatic amphibians in distilled because the water will not replace essential nutrients the frogs need. Just like drinking distilled water only would take it's toll on a human over time. You should also not use distilled in a water bowl, for the same reason. However, for the use of a fogger, or mister, which essentially is only adding water vapor into the tank to provide humidity, it makes perfect sense, since condensation and water vapor are, for all intents and purposes, distilled water. It just hasn't been cooked and condensed yet.

Hope that rambling clears things up a bit.
