    Default Throat color clarification

Does anyone who's owned female gray tree frogs know- do they have to have a completely white throat to be female? Do you know for sure that a juvenile is male as soon as they start to show a few dark spots on their throat? Could you post pictures of your female and juvenile grays and their throat color?

Have you heard it calling? It could be an adolescent male tree-frog, that could explain the darker color coming on

The best way is to tell by size when they're fully grown. My males don't always have a really dark throat. It comes and goes depending on the season. I would say calling is the best indicator...but I had 1 male that never called, and another male that didn't start making noise until recently (sounds kind of like a whimpering puppy instead of a normal chirp.) Although if they do call, you're guaranteed a male. Here is a thread with some pics I've shared in the past and lots of tips on sexing - http://www.frogforum.net/showthread....ight=grey+tree

Well, what I want to know is that if a young tree frog is definitely male if it shows any throat pigmentation. One of those pictures of a female sort of answers my question... The frog is about 1.5 inches and yesterday I noticed a barely noticeable amount of dark spotting around the front edge of his chin.

    Female -

    Male -

Notice they both have black spots, the male just has a generally darker throat. My males didn't exhibit a darkened throat usually until the same time they started calling though.

What do you think the chances are of this guy turning out to be female?

Looks like a nearly mature male to me. I wouldn't doubt if he starts calling very soon if he hasn't been making noises already. They seem to go through what I call "tree frog puberty" where they make rare noises that do not sound anything like a typical call.
