Thread: Red eyed tree frog

    Default Red eyed tree frog

Been thinking about getting a red eyed tree frog. Never owned a frog before but have owned a lot of geckos/lizards. I was just curious if one would do fine on its own or do I need more than one? Read that they do better in pairs!?! Also what's the ideal humidity I should keep them at? Seen different things from 80-100 to 40-50. Any info will help! Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum! One will do just fine on its own. They are good with others, but do not 'need' others in order to thrive. I keep my humidity around 80% and my frogs are all quite active and healthy.

Awesome, thank you! Now would a 12x12x18 be big enough for one or should I go with 18x18x24?

The 12x12x18 is technically big enough for one, but it doesn't give a whole lot of height and space for movement. I had my boys in a 20g high (when I had only 2) and they were much more relaxed after moving them to an 18x18x24. Once they moved they were more active and had a better appetite. So that is what I would recommend. They are easier to plant then also!

Welcome to the frog forum. I'm also a gecko owner who just got my first frogs (trio of red eyed's) in March. They are in a very heavily planted 20"x10"x24" and seem quite content. At least I never see crickets in there, see a lot of poop, and they're growing. I don't worry about the humidity. There's a lot of pothos in there, I have a shallow water area and I mist every night.

I've had mine sit a week or more with no issues, so I think you should be just fine

We have a aquarium led bar on ours. I think they react to the straight blue. Lights out 745pm theyre up by 8-815 for herman and granpa, 930ish for lilly.

18x18x24 planted. Ours are usually content at 78-80 day and 75ish night time. Boys are quite verbal when hungry and hunting its cute. We keep treated water by the gallon for our little zoo, 8 actually(we use 1 a day). So sitting isnt bad, its kind of good. Lets the chlorine fully evaporate. The water kind of bubbles a little on the sides when you treat so, gotta let it stand off
