I have an american toad who used to be a great eater. Now he isn't and hasn't eaten in forever and i'm very worried. He misses his crickets when the are right in front of him and then just takes a mouthful of ecoearth. I even put a nice big night crawler in front of him and he missed that. I just force fed him a night crawler dusted with calcium/d3. I usually feed him crickets dusted with calcium/d3 but i think he takes so long to get them that all the calcium rubs of the crickets therefore he is getting no calcium. I plan on going to the store and buying some wax worms and multivitamins tomorrow so i can start restoring his health. Also, i am going to move my toad into a smaller 10gal so i can pay closer attention to him. He is very weak and i think he might have metabolic bone disease so im just gonna plug him (not literally) with calcium to strengthen his bones. I know its not curable but it can still be dealt with. I am also gonna put some plastic rap on the the screen lid to hold in humidity. ANY OTHER ADVICE WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!!!!
I wish I had some advice, besides that you might need to take him to an actual vet that will see frogs just in case supplements alone won't be enough. Good luck, and if I find something on metabolic bone disease that looks helpful I'll post it.
Thanks ill do that. Grateful for your reply.
If its mbd make a uv chamber and yes stuff his *** with calcuim d3. For the uv chamber get a uvb 150 id say 16w so its not too bright, tin foil the tank sides(oooooooh shiny) and pray. Aside from maybe special meds vets use the uv tent mostly around here.
Ive also read prolonged exposure to lights that are too bright can fiddle with their vision, bad.... but seems to not be the case...
Have you soaked it in warm pedialyte and honey yet? Might also be highly backed up in the plumbing if ya know what i mean....
It's not MBD, he has short tongue disorder. It's a lack of Vitamin A so You want to get Repashy Supervite. Back off on the calcium, native toads don't need as much as frogs do. Toads also need their vivs on teh dryer side, they DON"T like it wet and humid unless you're breeding them. I feed my toads twice a week and alternate between the repashy calcium and the supervite. Also your toad doesn't need special lighting either. I don't use CFL or fluorescent either, only LED.
