Adspersus or Edulis that is the question.

Ive been in the market for a Pyxicephalus adspersus for about a year now but couldn't justify the $35 shipping cost for a $25 dollar frog. As luck would have it they had one at Petco last night so I snatched it up before it was sold to someone else. The question is, is it a Adspersus or Edulis? It looks like a Adspersus to me but I would like a second or third opinion from some of the more experienced keepers here. Here are a couple of pics of Lunch Box. Its about 2" in the pics. So what do you guys think Adspersus or Edulis?

Looks like an edulis. Large white spot on the tympanum is usually a dead giveaway, but the color aside from the dorsal stripe are a bit different. Could be another species or hybrid, but is not a adspersus. This frog also appears to have the interorbital bar that is a feature of an edulis.

I'm no expert though.

Grif your the second person to say Edulis the first being a guy from another frog forum with a doctorate in wildlife biology from South Africa. Oh well I rolled the dice at Petco and lost. Luckily they have a liberal return policy so back it goes. You wouldn't happen to know of any honest dealers that have Adspersus in stock?

No I do not. If you don't know what to look for when buying them it is easy to pick up the wrong species. You can always check kingsnake.com.

I've bought 4 from them over the last year. They are all adspersus. They were all in perfect shape and arrived exactly when they said they would. Before I say this I don't work for them or anything, but they gave me the best customer service I have ever had when purchasing a live animal over the phone or internet. Of course, you get the best you will pay more. One pixie is 30.00 + 30 to overnite. It's worth it to me to get a healthy animal.

Thanks, Grif for the spot on description. It is a edulis. Several years ago, Dr. Perry described a fourth species of African bullfrog - however it was not accepted by the scientific community. Quite recently, this species has now been recognized. Another South African scientist may have discovered a fifth species based on genetic testing. It is always exciting to hear of a new frog species

I have kept both species and for some reason I like the edulis. You got a beautiful frog!

I'm no expert though.

It does look sort of like a hybrid of sorts but I do know for sure that if it has 3 stripes, its an adspersus.
