    Default Outdoor Python Pics

    Hi all,

First, I apologize for my absence on the forum lately. I'm trying to slowly get back into the swing of things, but my research is consuming a lot of time. I've had to temporarily eliminate some "distractions" as my workload piled up.

We've had some nice warm, sunny days here so I've been taking the snakes out for some photos and outdoor playtime. All of the pictures were taken with an iphone and are unedited. Most are in full sun, but the blood python was in indirect light or shade in his photos (the sun really washes him out).

Orion - 82% Diamond python from Bill Stegall

Luna - BEL from Jerry Robertson

Thanks for looking! I love my babies :3

Right now the blood is in a plastic tub, but he's ready to move into his adult enclosure now. I'm actually in the process of ordering him and Luna 48" x 23" x 14" enclosures from Ed at Constrictors Northwest, and a 48" x 23" x 23" for Orion. He uses marine grade HDPE plastic that is FDA and USDA approved and totally UV and heat resistant. Be careful using PVC or other forms of plastic caging as heat and UV exposure can actually release volatiles that mess up certain hormone cascades in your pet (i.e. cause infertility)! I'll post photos once I have those setups up and ready in the future... Planning on making them semi-naturalistic and making my own backgrounds (you can only do so much with heavy-bodied snakes that trample everything, though).

Here's what Orion is living in, a custom built cage. But I'll be moving him into the Constrictors Northwest cage to kind of standardize everything in my herp room.

Bloods are awesome. I have a few resources that are incredibly useful if interested (PM me). They really don't deserve the bad rep that has been given to them (of course, all snakes have their own individual personalities). My guy is the most non-violent snake I own. He won't even strike at prey items! I just plop the FT rat in there and it's gone within the hour. Great with kids, too:

The biggest differences I noticed between the blood and ball pythons are the following. First, bloods are typically much better feeders. Second, you weigh them in pounds, not grams (lol). In general, colors tend to get better with age, while BP's usually become less colorful. They also only defecate once in a blue moon (Rambo has not had a bowel movement in 7 months now). That being said, they do urinate fairly often which requires maintenance... And when they do poo, look out! Many are also fairly vocal and will 'talk' to you... Rambo will let out slight huffs and hisses at times. It doesn't appear to be an aggressive thing, but it often comes out when he is slightly agitated or if you surprise him. Additionally, they are much 'lazier' snakes than ball pythons. If I let my BP cruise around, she will explore readily. Rambo on the other hand... a great lap pat for TV, etc... He doesn't move around a whole lot. He is still inquisitive and will do some exploring, but at a much slower pace.

You've got a couple of fantastic blood and short-tail python breeders in PA and neighboring states (i.e. Matt Minetola at Philly Herpetoculture).

Anyway, I could talk bloods (and snakes) all day... If you have any specific questions feel free to ask. And I can send you those resources via PM if if interested, too =)
