    Default new to aquatic frogs!

    Hey all!
I have had tree frogs successfully for about 4 years now, wtf's and retf.
My seven year old kiddo wants an adf, so since I currently have a 10 gallon tank with some room for one, I think we'll go for it.
I do have a small bristle nose pleco (albino), he is a small pleco full grown at about 4 inches. And we also have 3 mystery snails.
I think we'll be fine adding the adf, but thought before we take the plunge I would ask the experts here!
The tank is in my son's room, which remains relatively quite most of the time.

My set up is fairly simple:
    10 gallon tank
    gravel substrate
    several sword plants
a couple ornaments (spider man and sponge bob)
one cave that the pleco likes to hide in, so perhaps I should another hide for the adf?
    low flow filter
canopy cover with light for the plants

    Here are my questions:
    1. would these parameters be suitable for an adf?
    a. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, ~10-20 nitrates
    b. 78 degrees F
    c. pH of 7.5

    2. I have seen conflicting info on the gravel, is this ok for an adf? Is there any risk of it injesting the gravel?
    3. food should be frozen brine shrimp and blood worms? and frog pellets? can I feed anything else? What can I NOT feed?

I of course will be doing my homework before bringing home the frog, but anything else you all want to advise on I would really appreciate it!

    Thank you!

I honestly would go with an African Clawed Frog. African dwarf frogs are almost always Wild Caught, and kept in inadequate conditions until sold to a frog owner, and usually end up dying of too much stress. They also have a tendency to get Chytrid Fungus, and Spring disease. African Clawed frogs on the other hand, Are Mainly Captive Bred, and now come in Albino now too. They also can eat larger food items than dwarf frogs, Item like Bloodworms, Blackworms, Nightcrawlers, Pellets, and Parasite free guppies. One is okay in a ten gallon tank, and are okay with the set-up you described. But even then there are two blaring problems: Pleco fish are not good. They grow large, large enough to go in koi ponds, and have large spines, that could hurt the frog and the fish.(If you don't want algae, get snails) and gravel, for aquatic frogs, is a no-no. They shove food into their mouths, and can swallow gravel and get impacted, and die of not being able to pass waste. Sand is a great substrate, and can have plants in it.(Gravel can too, but food sinks into gravel, and is harder to clean/get rid of than sand) All in all, Clawed Frogs are much better as pets than dwarf frogs.

Thanks so much for your reply!
im on the go at the moment, so can't really respond, but did want to clarify I have a bristle nose pleco, it will not grow any larger than he is at the moment... They are small pleco a and he's been with me for almost 5 years!
    ill respond more later.

Thanks for the info on the adf, I was unaware they are usually wild caught!
Do ACF get big? I thought they got to be pretty big, so was looking for a smaller tank inhabitant because I already have the bnp and the snails..
Also, so funny about the gravel, I have read what you are saying, and also read that the sand was bad as well.. others say the gravel isn't bad for adf's because they are so small and the sand is worse.
Can someone who has an adf chime in?
    Thanks again!

Well first off, pleco fish all have spikes, and clawed frogs eat anything they can grab, so that could end up horrible for every party. Females get hand sized, but males are generally smaller, about half the size of females. Gravel is bad, because normal sized gravel is easy to swallow, (and can mistake for a snail if there are any) but nearly impossible to pass and requires veterinary care. Sand can be swallowed as well, but it is easier to pass than gravel

Okay, well sounds like an aquatic frog of either species will not work for us.
    Thanks for your help.

many of these enclosures have gravel, so no tsure what I'm missing here: http://www.frogforum.net/showthread.php?t=22211
and many care sheets say gravel is acceptable for adf, not acf. Like here: http://www.exoticpetsresources.com/a...og-care-sheet/, and here: http://aquaticfrogs.tripod.com/id13.html
Just curious if you own any adf Xavier? If you don't, I would prefer getting advice from someone who does...
    Thanks.

I did, but they both eventually did succumb to spring disease after a while of horrible conditions. Gravel is acceptable for dwarf frogs (they are too small to swallow it) but for African clawed sand is the way to go, either that or bare bottom

I am fairly certain the African dwarf frogs are not wild caught in the North American pet trade. They are fairly easy to breed now. I do agree that they tend to come from some horrendous conditions and usually make it to the stores in either rough shape or already carrying disease.
