In 2011 a research team led by professor Chris Shaw At the School of Pharmacy identified 2 proteins or Peptides, Which can be used in a controlled and targeted way to regulate angiogenesis-the process by which blood vessels grow in the body. This discovery holds the potential to develop new treatments for more then 70 major diseases and conditions that effect more than a billion people world wide. The proteins are found in the secretions of the Waxy monkey frog and the giant firebelly toad. Professor Shaw says " The proteins that we have discovered have the ability to either stimulate or inhibit the growth of blood vessels. By switching off angiogenesis the inhibiting blood vessel growth, a protein from the waxy monkey frog has the potential to kill cancer tumours." " On the other hand, a protein from the Giant fire belly toad has been found to switch on angiogenesis. and stimulate blood vessels growth. This has the potential to treat an array of diseases and conditions that require blood vessel repair quickly, such as a wound healing, organ transplants, diabetic ulcers, and damage caused by strokes and heart conditions." I discovered this awhile back while trying answer one of my questions about frogs and found it so interesting, and still myself try to find as much possible about this discovery. Hopes this help out abit, and Professor Shaw and his colleagues Professor Brian walker and Dr. Tianbao Chen were awarded the Commendation in the Cardiovascular Innovation Award at the medical Futures Innovations Awards in London for this research.
