    Default Jeepers Peepers!

Told yall in the frog egg thread ive been busy lmao. So, theres a ton of peepers jesus h popsicle... catching them, lol another deal. But we are trying to gather a few males and females to keep and breed. So far, 2 beautiful boys. 2 completely different looking frogs. The noise doesnt phase us nature people, but like the firebellies waterfall, the peepers drive our one pitbull insane lmao. Were working on an large upright with super thick planting and a big pond area for our gathering of the peeps. He gave me 5 more days before the pond is backfilled... boo....

    But heres the peeps!

Peep one(looks like a choir frog to me...)

    Peep two

2 so far. Dense planting is needed for 2-3 males because they are territorial like darts... but we believe it is possible. They ate well also. Im suprised

    Yup. I went insane...

Well, we can deffinatly tell this isnt a common pet. Not too much info out there. Ive done what i can to mimic/bring home (lol in buckets) their home as i found it. So im praying for major success! Any hoarded information from experience would be helpful. Small general care sheets are out there, but personal experience/tips would be much appreciated!

Um, it's a big no no to field collect chorus frogs in PA, even with a fishing license. Maybe posting such a thing in an open forum online is not a good thing

After scouring game laws... the froggies gottsa leave tomarrow. Thank you for the heads up. However... we can apply for permits to keep 1or 2 if we send in pics, info, that jazz. May give it a shot.

Well, after a few hours on the phone with harrisburg, a grain of salt, and a teary eye, the babies all havebeen returned to a pool in the stream directly over the hill from the pond...

Sigh, and i now have a massive pile of permit apps to fill out.

Only a few hours with Harrisburg? That was quick for them! Lol

Sucks that they go back, but you'll get replacement players soon enough

Yeah. Really wanted a local noise maker. Dropped off some tads with their kin as well... a scungy old yard pond across the road. Weve really had our eyes on a pair of whites. But, all i see are massive health issues, so like darts(#1 want), we are shy to pull the trigger. Lija already yelled at me to get darts lol.

Darts are so much easier. I've done the whole tree frog gig, I'll stick with darts thankyouverymuch. Lol

Sorry to hear that the peepers had to go back :/. Agree with Bill, tree frogs are full of personality but calling them a handful is an understatement. Besides the initial start up, darts are super easy to take care of

Thanks guys. We are applying for an educational study liscense. Also maybe the optional one that will let us get a table at expos! Bwa ha ha. Have a few breeders to vouch for us. So, all thats left if my ultimate question... "With you guys changing exotic pet laws all the time, how the f do i get an exotic owner permit?" Call here call there call the local police, restart circle.... How much dookie is that???????????? So, a trip to our local game commission and dcnr offices are in order. The lady in harrisburg, while trained to be evasive, started me in the right direction after my 3rd call back... Its not like i want a grizzly bear, tiger, and a wolf.... i just want my darn reptiles and amphibians without being bothered. If they want to see my setups and request monthly paperwork, and $25 monthly fee, then, so be it, its worth it. Its also a step for the wife to have her dream career....

I'm not in any way familiar with US gaming laws or whatever, but what's the thinking behind such legislation? Are spring peepers considered a protected species or is there some other reasoning? If their protected status prohibits collecting, it seems a bit counter-productive ... a pond is to be filled in, but collecting tadpoles and growing them out for later release is illegal?

On the edges of farms here I often come across eggs and tadpoles inside buckets which I can guarantee will dry out, become toxically polluted, or be emptied out before the tadpoles mature. From time to time I collect a few eggs or tadpoles for growing out and later releasing. Sometimes these are "protected" species (ha ha), but really ... I can't feel too bad about intervening, since the alternative is that the entire population will die. I can't consider that I'm "interfering" with nature either, since a farmer's bucket isn't really a natural environment in the first place.

Anyway, sorry ... a bit off-topic. I might be off the mark, but sometimes I get a bit annoyed by blanket "one-size-fits-all" legislation.

Uh, that'll be "game laws" ... nothing to do with games of chance, though I guess a game of chance is generally what you end up playing with trained bureaucrats.

Haha! Our state gaming laws are even more ridiculous than our fish and game laws. the problem is, these blanket laws are passed by beaurocrats that have no idea what they are even banning (see the Lacey act in congress right now). That is why it is so important to get involved with conservation efforts, locally, nationally and globally.

Sorry K for the little detail
