I bought a small green pacman 3 days ago and so far it has not eaten.
When I bought it, it was in an extremely small plastic cage with only moss. I took it home and put it in a bigger cage with some coconut fiber and water. It stayed in the water for about 24 hours until I lightly nudged it and it hopped out and peed. It seems to be shedding and will not move at all unless I try to feed it or come in contact with it. It is not moving from its spot at all. It is not burrowing.
Is it just adjusting or should I be concerned?
*The picture was before the water bowl, its cage is all coco fiber with a water bowl*
1. Size of enclosure ( 2 gallon)
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences (Only the one frog)
3. Humidity ( I do not have a meter yet but it is misty)
4. Temperature (70s-80)
5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish ( dechlorinated tap for everything)
6. Materials used for substrate (coconut fiber)
7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials.
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv. (water bowl with 2 inches of coconut fiber)
8. Main food source (Has not eaten since I have had it)
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often) ( dusted crickets but it has not eaten)
10. Lighting ( window lighting)
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure (room temp near a window)
12. When is the last time he/she ate (not since I have had he/she)
13. Have you found poop lately (nope)
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
15. Describe frog's symptoms and/or recent physical changes; to include it's ventral/belly area.
(The frog seems to be shedding and is not moving or eating)
16. How old is the frog (not exactly sure but it is young)
17. How long have you owned him/her (3 days)
18. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred (captive)
19. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats (tried feeding crickets and mealworms)
20. How often the frog is handled ( only when I was changing the tank)
21. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area (some traffic but it has 3 sides covered)
22. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc) ( water change every day)
Make sure you get those meters. Temps should be 80-83 during the day with a drop to 75-77 at night. Humidity should be 70-80%.
You should offer lighting to the frog. It does not have to be UVB but the frog could overheat with direct sunlight.
Based on the deplorable conditions you described it sounds like it needs time to adjust to its new environment. If you happen to find poop, send it in for a fecal exam. I don't think it's sick just still recovering from the lack of proper care it was receiving prior
Litoria caerulea 1.1.0 (White's Tree Frog)
Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis 0.1.0 (Anerythristic Honduran Milk Snake) Tliltocatl albopilosus 0.0.2 (Curly Hair Tarantula)
Aphonopelma hentzi 0.0.1 (Texas Brown Tarantula)
Avicularia avicularia 0.0.2 (Pinktoe Tarantula)
Brachypelma smithi ex. annitha 0.0.1 (Mexican Giant Red Knee Tarantula) Monocentropus balfouri 0.0.2 (Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula)
Harpactira pulchripes 0.0.1 (Golden Blue Leg Baboon Tarantula)
The lamp and meters are in the mail. It is not in direct sunlight, just partial sun through blinds. I just wanted to make sure it was not sick.
Give it a place to hide ( a log hide, or a patch of vines to hide underneath)
I got the meters, humidity is 80, temp is around 80 as well. Still no signs of eating.
All he is doing is sitting in his water dish. I offered crickets as well as Dubia cockroaches. What am I doing wrong?
Try soaking him in 1 part unflavored pedialyte to 10 parts water. Make sure the water is warm to the touch( and dechlorinated of course) And then offer him bits of nightcrawler worms. Make sure they're undyed. If you rub the food around his mouth are it might coax him into attacking the food and devouring it. Or just try the feeding method I offered to see if that might work.
This saline/glucose solution should be 0,9%.
You can make this by getting 1 L of warm water and put in 9 grams of Natriumchloride (just table salt is fine, as long as it doesn't contain iodine wich will be written on it when it contains iodine)
and 9 grams of glucose (or sugar if glucose isn't readily available).
Mix it in good, and let it settle to reach room temperature.
Put in you're frog for about 10-15 minutes.
I stole the recipe off of a super old post so the credit would go to wesleybrouwer for that bit. As for the constant shedding, he might be doing that since they eat their skin when they do? Not really sure why he'd be shedding so much.
Guys, would you please advise on things you know about. Please!
Emily, I don't think there is anything wrong with your frog, it looks pretty round, he is just adjusting, but please post pic of his tank so we can look if there is problem with decor or not.
What at you need to do is nothing! Just leave the guy be and give him some crickets in his tank. Do not touch him or anything in the enclosure, except change of water, just leave him be for at least a few days. He'll come around.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
Just wanted to close this up and say thanks to everyone. My frog seems more normal now and has eaten the past two days
Glad to hear he's doing better, sometimes they just need the time and space to adjust.
Awesome! Congrats!
