Stupid question, answer needed

This should be fairly obvious, but I thought I'd ask anyways.....

I bought some 4in. 6w heat tape at the reptile expo today. Before my wife asks me "how I burned the house down with one of my frog tanks"

I need to know if it matters which side goes towards the tank? The copper side(pictured)? Or other side.

It should be copper out. They are like the rear window defogger on most cars. Did you get a control for it? That stuff can get pretty hot.

Krispy, I just want to confirm. Copper side towards the room and non copper stuck to the glass?

One last question. If I have two 1ft strips, could I essentially splice them together with electrical wire to make a longer strip? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible as long as you wire it correctly. Thoughts?
