Thread: can Red Eyes eat meal worms?

Default can Red Eyes eat meal worms?

so im wondering what else red eyed tree frogs can eat aside from crickets?

Then id have to of course do a test and see if frenchy actually WILL eat any other than crickets, lol, he seems to be very particular

"no crickets... NO EATING!" he thinks! lol

Ive tried flies, he wouldnt eat them... Maybe he didnt see them or they were too fast?
Ive tried wax worms... He paid no attention even when they were wiggling in the bowl
Now im thinking to try meal worms. Not to be mistaken with superworms, which id not risk, considering their strong mandibles.

Question is, can red eyes eat meal worms even? has anyone tried before?

IMO ... the simple answer is....... NO.
They will increase the risk of intestinal prolapses. Too difficult to digest.

Simply establish a feeding schedule with high quality supplements.
A great option is to rotate more than one brand?
Date the lid of the supplements when they are opened ; establish ( discuss w/ the company) as to how long they can remain open before loosing potency.
Also , if the supplements are purchased in person, double check the interior seal has not been broken.

Repashy makes a cricket feeder to 'gut load ' the crickets.
The cricks for that night's feeding can be removed from the bin in the AM and given the gut load and a pc of fresh veggies.
ie sweet potatoes ( high in Vit A ) red leaf lettuce
I simply leave them in a gallon baggie for the day ( hang the bag ) ; they can't get out.

And if you want something else to feed it, why not roaches and earthworms?

Agreed, mealworms aren't really nutritious at all and they're hard to digest. The chitin in their segments does not break down. I do not use them for any of my frogs or our day gecko.

Your best bet is to gut load those crickets with healthy fruits and veggies as Lynn has recommended .

Agree with the other ladies You could try roaches, but none of mine were ever interested and I'm allergic to them so I gave up. I feed my crickets all fresh fruits and vegetables also.

Okay thanks for the help, i wont try then

Im not worried about a lack of nutrition, i was just lookin to mix things up a bit

I feed my crickets fruits and vegetables, nothing acidic though... But apples, spinach, lettuce, carrot, cucumber. I also give them fluckers cricket quencher which is calcium fortified and i also dust them with a d3/calcium supplement

Interesting that it ignored flies. You could let the wax worms pupate and morph into moths. Small, flappy, and not very fast, they're generally popular with treefrogs.

Earthworms are excellent from a nutrition standpoint as well as variety, but some treefrogs will be picky about them. The type of worm matters for palatability, Eisenia fetida are commonly available as "Red Wrigglers" but can be the poorest tasting- they have foul tasting self defense secretions, so you might try starting with a different species.

I agree with Brian, no composting worms. See if you can find smaller/younger nightcrawlers. I've fed the big ones, but after having problems with one my Martha no longer wants to eat them, *sigh*
    Mom to these fine frogs!
