Default Oophaga Pumilio Blue Jean Vivarium

Had to pull down my Blue Jean tank to destroy a Nematode infestation before it spread to other tanks. So here is the progress on rebuilding their home for them.

    Back ground foamed in

Put a piece of drift wood on the wall to act as a raised planter.

    Working on wood location

    Wood from above

    Wood Foamed in place

    Background foam covered.

Broms mounted and some moss and moss mix added.

Covered this entire section in moss mix. Should look awesome once it grows in!

I will update once more work is completed.

She's looking good buddy. You need an orchid on that moss covered menagerie.

that looks really good paul, can you explain what happened as far as the nematode investation. did the frogs have it or was it the vivarium? and what can others do to prevent that? thanks

Nematodes are not harmful to frogs. They are a "MicroFauna" that will eat the Springtails (which is vital in a Pumilio tank... really a vital part to any Vivarium). They will infest the tank since the frogs won't eat them and can cross contaminate to other tanks. You typically get them from not properly cleaning plants or leaf liter. I added some new Broms to the old tank and I think that is where they came from. I didn't clean them well enough I suppose. The only way to completely get rid of them is to take the tank apart. Toss the soil and leaf liter. Bleach Dip all plants and start over, which is what I did here.

oh man, those are nasty.. so theres no types of nematodes that require a host to live off. i guess theyre independent and thats where nematodes and parasites differ

Sometimes plants look clean and we toss them in and pay the price later for not processing them. Usually no issues, but when we don't clean them....
Glad you were able to catch problem and resolve it. Gonna be an awesome viv!!

I am just starting my viv. I got all of my stuff ("false bottom", ABG, and leaf litter). I assume all of it is safe. Do I have any reason to think my assumptions were false?

I don't know what I don't know and can't fix something unless I know its broken.

Leaf liter needs to be boiled for 5 mins and then baked in the oven at 250 until dry to kill any insect eggs or insects themselves mixed in. I never do anything with my ABG but I have heard of people who bake their ABG mix to make sure anything it is is cooked to medium well.

I will do an update on this tank in a few weeks. It looks nearly the same right now. I seeded the tank with a couple of Annuals and perennials just to see how they do and I see some growth in them
