I could possibly use a violet or an african violet, but what are some other options for a flowering plant that stays fairly small?

There are sinningias that stay small. The s. Muscicola flowers near continuously. There are also larger variants. Primulina species would be another to look at. Then there are rhizomous begonias that will creep along the ground and flower as it goes.
