Thread: Zoo Med Waterfall Kit Question(s)

Default Zoo Med Waterfall Kit Question(s)

I ordered a waterfall kit by Zoo Med, prepared and assembled the kit according to the instructions. The waterfall operates perfectly, but a weird water discoloration occurred. The water appears denngy, almost like a watered down coffee or cola color. The water was treated before it was added to the terrarium, using Reptisafe by Zoo Med (this caused no change in water color). I added the water to test the fall before I added any fixtures, and the discoloration occured instantly. The Terrarium is set up (from bottom up) as follows...

    Hydroballs, mesh screen, Eco Earth.

The hydroballs are made of clay, and were rinsed as directed by the instructions. The Eco earth was perpaired as directed, and with the same water later added to the fall. Eco earth is a coconut fiber based substrate. All other fixtures included at the time the fall was tested (pump and hose) were rinsed before being added. The water has no scent (at least not one that stands out over the scent of the eco earth) And I can't think of any other factors that might have caused this issue.

    questions
Could the discoloration be caused by the Hydroballs not being rinsed thoroughly enough before they were added?
Dose Eco earth (coconut based substrate in general) cause water discoloration?
If this issue is caused by failure to thoroughly rinse the Hydroballs, or by another unknown factor. Could it be harmful to my frog?

Thank You for your time, any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Can be from the Eco Earth, some will settle, but nothing to worry about. Most likely what you are seeing is natural tanins from the piece of driftwood included in the waterfall kit, again nothing to worry about.
