separating land from water

Hello,

This may seem like a very basic question...

I'm keeping australian red eyed tree frogs in an Exo Terra mini tall (12x12x18 inch)
I'm wondering how a hobbyist separates the water section to the land section. I have read that if the substrate and the water meet, it breeds harmful bacteria. So what method to pros use?

A 12x12 foot print doesnt leave you much room for a water feature. The can take up as little space as you want, but with 12x12 to work with I am not sure I would go through the trouble. That being said the most common way to do this is to build a false bottom.

What do you plan to use the water feature for?

You can also grade your soil so it ends right at the waterline and then us moss or wood or rocks to make the transition into the water.. So soil touching the water isnt all together bad. You will create a marsh like area in your tank where you could plant marginals.
