Thread: A good soil?

    Default A good soil?

I'm not exactly frog related but I need suggestions on a good soil to use in a terrarium I'm setting up for some red eyed crocodile skinks that I am hopefully getting soon. I didn't think the abg mix would do well because these skinks like to bury themselves under the soil.. But I wanted to use something other then coco fiber because I've read plants won't grow in it? I'm gonna try and set it up with live mosses and pythos plants I think . I'm gonna have the hydro balls, weed guard on top of that, the soil on top of that, and then the moss and pythos. I'm also gonna try to slope it and make a shallow water area. So any suggestions to any day tutorials for anything like this, please feel free to post it for me

If you only plan on keeping pothos, then cocofiber will be just fine. It will grow just fine as long as it gets half decent lighting. Vining philodendrons as well.

Is there something in ABG that would harm the skinks?

I'm not sure. The abg might not harm them. Just wasn't sure since they will dig and hide in it

    Hmmmm.... Good question

The ABG from Josh's Frogs ( is great) ,however, it has charcoal and tree *fern fiber in it. The *tff is sharp!
    - My last shipment had leca aggregate in it as well. The leca was not in my previous purchases of ABG from them.

Look at the ingredients in NEHerp's mix? Call them.... maybe they will make something for you? Lovely people.

Maybe its best to mix you own? This way you know their skin is protected.
You might message Shawn Harrington ( FB "The Frog Whisperer" ) he is breeding skinks - I think.
