Heat bulb

Whats a good watt for a heat bulb to use during the winter time? Mine I have in it now isn't going above 80 during the day I've noticed. Its been VERY cold where I live. And I am going tomorrow to get a higher heat bulb for him, but don't want to get something to high of a wattage.

Not sure what size heat bulb you have at the moment. Have you considered switching to a CHE (ceramic heat emitter) for heat? It produces really really good heat without producing any light. They also last much much longer than heat bulbs. Just a thought. I would say a 100w CHE would be perfect for you.

I've just been using the blue day heat bulb. But hasn't been doing the best this Winter. Like I said, its only been getting to 79-80 this winter. Right now its 6 degrees where I am right now.

The 100 watt CHE, as Paul said, is definitely the way to go. Connect it to a thermostat so it doesn't overheat the tank. They last longer than the lightbulbs and do not dry things out as bad.

Hello, I was having the same problem with heat myself this winter and this is what I did. If you build a box out of wood or even some nice thick cardboard and put it around 3 sides, back and 2 sides I find it it holds the heat in good. I use under tank heaters on this tank so they r inbetween the wood and glass, its almost as if it was underneath. Leave a gap around the top edge were your lid is and a gap on each side in the front for air flow. You need the airflow again just as if it was underneath. I will post a picture. And the tank is out from the wall a good 4 inches so the air flows out both sides of the foil. And there is a 10-20 gallon UTH on one side and a 30-50 on the other so there is a temp gradient, and this is a 20 gallon tall not a 10 gallon. In the summer I can tear it all down.

Hmm ok, I might try something like this. My room he is in gets no heat, so all the heat is relied on the heat lamp.

Be sure to mist well. The heaters work well, but can dry out the tank .

If you use an UTH I'd recommend placing on a side wall so he doesn't burrow down and burn himself. I use 2 UTH pads. One on each side, in the corner. It creates a nice warm corner, which mine all love.
