My water lillies Ive had for probably a near year now, havent flowered at all since Ive had them and Im thinking its cause Ive never fertilized them. So what are people here using to fertilize these in their frog ponds?
thanks
I've had my water lily for a few years now, and it has utterly exploded out of its pot. Flowered about a dozen times this summer, even though it is a hardy lily... My secret? Repot the thing in real dirt... I don't recommend chemical fertilizers for the animals sakes, I'm sure there are safe ones, but dirt works just fine. To be fair my pond is exploding with plants, and there is probably more to it than just their dirt so I'll give you my whole setup, as it is highly unconventional. I have no filter. Water is pumped into a bog bin that consists of a layer of gravel, leaf litter, garden dirt, and then peat moss with marginal plants like cattails growing in it (sphagnum also). A trickle of water escapes back into the pond. The water was cloudy for a few days then clarified nicely. There is a fair bit of sediment and dead plant stuff on the bottom of the pond. At any rate my water lily split it's 12 inch pot this summer, and I'm constantly pulling water hyacinth and hornwort out, so I have all the nutrition I could possibly want. Water is tanned from the leaves, but clear...

You can use pond fertilizer or aquarium products safely. Seachem has a nice line of aquarium plant products.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
