White's Tree Frog with Irritation on Belly, What Topicals are OK?

Hi all,

My little WTF got out last night and went on a rather treacherous adventure through my house... I didn't notice him missing for between 12 and 24 hours, and found him huddled in the corner of another room covered in hair and dust from our hardwood floors.

I have been tending to him gently for about two hours straight now.

Got the mess of hair and debris off of him, and he has proper levels of energy... but he has a red colored rash on his belly.

I have him sitting in dechlorinated water/honey solution, and he is constantly moving around and rubbing his belly against the bottom of the dish. It looks as though he has itching and irritation and is trying to relieve it. I will be contacting the vet ASAP in the morning and setting up a quarantined hospital tank for once he's out of the bowl, but for now, I was wondering if there are any topical ointments that are healthy for a frog's underside to relieve the irritation and/or fight possible bacteria.

Most people mention Neosporin, bactine or some generic antibiotic ointment, but a version WITHOUT painkillers in it. Painkillers kill frogs.

Also honey has mild antibiotic properties, maybe give a water soak with a drop of honey in it?

I would do a pedialyte soak. 1 part pedialyte, 10 parts water. He's going to need some serious rehydration. Add elly said, plain neosporin, no pain killers will help. Make sure you figure out how he got out so it doesn't happen again. Poor guy keep us updated.

Amy is spot on! Do what she suggested every day for about a week. No need for antibiotics. They won't do anything here.
A frog need a hydrotherapy, it will help with electrolyte balance, flush toxins and water exchange.
So glad you found it when it wasn't too late.

I have a nice honey bath with dechlorinated water in his hospital tank. Already, since last night, much of the rash-looking redness has dissipated, and my little guy isn't itching his belly against the bottom of the dish. It's getting much better, so I will keep up with the soaks and go purchase some Pedialyte.

As for the "how" of it, he went on an unauthorized jaunt through the house, and gathered a nice hair-and-dust ball. Far be it from the imagination that such things are sanitary.
