Hey Strider! The Eggcrate base is a good one to use. I got tired of dealing with water changes and all that mess so I have moved away from them for now, but they work great.
Couple things to add (you probably know already, but just so it is said).
1. Make sure to build in an easy way to siphon out water as it gets closer to the substrate
2. Make the false bottom deep enough so your water feature works right, but the soil does not get swamped
3. If the water will be 2" deep or so consider heating the tank with an aquatic heater. They work great! The water being heated will help keep the water level down through evaporation which in turn will help keep your humidity high.
4. If you hide mechanicals in the water make sure you can get to them fairly easy.
One quick counter to the Falsebottom is that a traditional drainage layer promotes a heartier microfauna population.
Cant wait to see how this comes together!

Thanks Paul and Lynn! I can't wait to get moving on it! I should be able to make some real progress tomorrow or sometime this week. I still do have to order ABG and plants though, I currently only have the false bottom materials. I will try to update this thread everyday!
