    Default Problem with My Frog

    Hello,

My Pacman frog if about 10 months old now.
Recently he hasn't been opening his eyes and they look almost as if the are skinned over now. I know when this type of frog starts to dry out they make like a caccoon over themselves but is that what happened to mine?

The temperatures are right in the cage. I must it 3+ times a day, and keep the water bowl constantly filled.

I can't figure out the problem and don't want my frog to suffer because I don't know what to do. If someone can help me, me and my frog will be very greatful.

    Thanks,
    Nick

    Default Problem with My Frog

    1: tank size: 5 gal
2: just one Frog, roughly the size of the width of a playing card
    3: kept between 70% to 80%
    4: Temperature: Day: 24 to 26 Celsius Night: 21 to 23 Celsius
5: Tap Water: room temp or lukewarm
    6: ExoTerra Jungle Moss
7: fake plan where he normally hides under and water dish
    8: Large or XL crickets
9: Calcium Powder on roughly every other feeding
10: 15 watt bulb in hood
11: Under mount heat mat, on 24\7 only heat source at night
12: ate about 4 days ago, been afraid to feed him if he can't see
13: found poop like almost 2 weeks ago
14: Will supply pictures when I can
15: the frog went to water dish where he now stays in, and he had his eyes like half closed. At first I thought nothing of it but then they stayed like that for a few days with him just turning in circles if he moves. He doesn't open them if I touch him or pick him up. They appear to look "skinned over"
16: the frog is roughly 12 months old is my best guess
17: I've owned him for almost 10 months, bough him when he was about the size of a half dollar or smaller
18: bought I'm from PetSmart so I assume Captive Bred
19: I just feed him Crickets
20: the frog is only handled if needed like when cleaning cage, or when this eye problem started and I needed a closer look
21: the enclosure is passed like 2 times a day except from like me going to spray it
22: I spray daily multiple times, I keep the water dish filled constant, and change moss only when needed

First thing that stands out to me is your water. Tap is fine but it needs to be treated with something to take the chlorine out, because it's very bad for the frog. If the water is not treated get him out of it right away, it's possibly toxing your frog.

Secondly, crickets need to be gut loaded and coated in calcium and vitamins regularly. Night crawlers are a good food to try, as well as dubia roaches.

Oh yeah, I do gut load them, forgot to put that. I bought Cricket food and Jelly that has calcium.

Spring water can be ok, it just has additives once in a while that are bad. Best choice is just get some water treatment and stick with the tap, just a drop or two per cup, so it tends to last. Avoid distilled, it will leach vitamins out of your frog.

You think the water might be the problem? If so why would it affect him now and not since I got him 10 months ago?

Your city may have added more chemical than normal to the system, or it could be a cumulative affect of month of exposure just catching up with him. It might very well not be the issue at all, but something that should be corrected for his overall health.

It's probably the water. The toxins can take a long time to affect the frog in a way that you can see. Plus, they can cause brain damage which is what the frog moving in circles sounds like.

He doesn't move in circles I guess I worded that bad. If and when he does move he doesn't move far just turns slightly so he's facing a different way

Maybe you're lucky and his brain hasn't been damaged then. IMO your problem is definitely the water though. You need to remove the substrate and replace it with substrate that has been expanded with either treated tap water or spring water. You also need to use the treated water for his water dish, misting, ect. No untreated tap water at all.

I like SeaChem Prime water conditioner. With only one frog a bottle of it will probably last you a really long time.

Pictures would really help us tell if this is an infection or something else going on. Water is definitely an issue, I use seachem prime to treat mine. Do the crickets free roam? If so, you want to get all the moss out of there, your frog can take a mouthful of moss and cause serious digestive issues. Any crickets that aren't eaten right away need to be removed so that they do not bite your frog. I would recommend tong feeding for a while when he is not feeling well also. It can take months for the stress and improper conditions to show, but when they do, they can turn serious quickly.

Ok I will get pictures tonight. And I am going to fix the water. As for free roam, if you mean walk in the cage until he eats them yes, he's been fine with it until the eye problem started and I stopped that. The moss is big enough to where if he does happen to get some in his mouth he can get it out I've watched him do it before

I had the same problem with my pacman (skin over the eyes). It turned out to be the daytime light was too bright. Change to a very dim light and see if that helps. :0)
