I'm glad I read this post because if I ever have to deal with crickets as feeders I will know what is best to feed them.
Commercial apples are pretty bad from a pesticide standpoint.
I don't worry too much about the type of veggie scraps that go into my feeders. It's usually a mix of random stuff out of my garden (that includes frozen things in the winter). Variety and chemical free are my main goals. The insects still get dusted before sacrifice to the frog beasts.
I agree it is best not to obsess about the types of food you give to feeders. I've been raising roaches for about a year now, on mostly oatmeal. Oatmeal is probably the worst thing you can give them, and yet I'm on my second generation breeding. The key is variety, for optimum health of your pets, but again don't obsess about it. Lately I've been pulling water plants out of frozen ponds to feed to roaches, it is a sickness... Don't be like me. If you want to feed them yams or broccoli, go ahead. Just use organic, and don't do it every day. My two cents...
