Hello everyone!! Just wondering what kind of critters I can give to Houdini my gray tree frog as a treat. He is given crickets as a staple but is there anything they love that i can treat him with?
I've heard that many frogs seem to like wax worms, but those are high in fat and low in nutrition: frog junk food. They shouldn't be too bad as a treat though. Especially since I don't think greys have as bad a problem with obesity as dumpies do. I hear rice beetle larvae is good for small frogs. Aphids would work, but you'd want them from plants that have not been sprayed. Or you could try a bit of a nightcrawler. You probably should avoid superworms and mealworms unless they've just shed, both are very high in chitin and can cause impaction.
What's a nightcrawler? Never heard of those!I I'll maybe try to get some of the beetle larvae or waxworms...just to give him something different once in a while!!
It's a large earthwormSmaller earthworms are easier to feed though if you have a small frog, otherwise you have to cut the worm up and that's just nasty. My frogs don't like the pointy head end either. Some people also feed Dubia (two spotted roach) but they would have to be young ones, as they can get to be as big as your frog!
Mom to these fine frogs!

Also hornworms are good if your frog is impacted. Although I've never seen one, so I don't know if they'd be a good size for a gray. Also, they can make the stool a bit runny.
Edit: Apparently hornworms get about 1-4 in, probably too big.
People in the Feeders section could probably answer the question better than I could.
My greys really only eat crickets. I tried waxworms once before knowing they weren't great, and none of my frogs have had any interest. Same goes for earthworms and dubia roaches. So I've given up and just make sure that my crickets are fed a variety of healthy foods and dusted with vitamins so that my frogs get what they need.
ETA: Female greys are voracious eaters and can have issue with obesity, the males have less of a problem, but I think even my boys would be quite plump if I let them eat to their heart's content.

Thanks Amy, I learned something.
There are also isopods/woodlice and inchworms. Though inchworms are a bit high in fat, according to Strider18.
Inchworms will fatten a froggy up really quick lol. I had my pcf go from skinny to a little more than plump in a few days of feeding them. Definitely try to stay away from fatty foods.

What's good to dust the crickets with? And how often? I feed the crickets potato, carrot and lettuce plus the bug grub stuff
Any kind of calcium powder with vitamin D. Or better, a multivitimin with Calcium and D. I use Repashy Plus.
And just dust whatever he gets fed? I'll have a look for that, thanks!
Probably not every time for adult frogs, more like every other time or every third time.
Edit: It's easier to dust if you have a small container with a lid, just put some vitamin powder in, put the bugs in and shake.
Edit Edit: With some calcium supplements you need to space them out. If you have a separate vitamin supplement you want to give it's best to give it on a different day than the ones you give the calcium on. However, the Repashy Plus stuff I have is designed to be given with every feeding.
since i have Hydei fruit flies for my dart frogs, i often dust a few and throw them in, and sometimes bean beetles when i have a hatch. But typically it's dusted crix.
