Dear frog lovers near and wide! I cannot even explain how long it took me to work up the nerve and finally post, but as a concerned frog owner, I felt it was necessary. Anyhow, I have quite a few Golden Tree Frog tadpoles, 26 to be exact and 3 so far have grown their legs and whatnot, and out of those 23, I have major concerns over two of the little guys for two different reasons. I'll start with this one, because it is much easier to explain: it seems one of my tadpoles is having trouble staying under the water. This has been going on for about a week now and I am unsure what to do. Various other places have suggested changing the water more often, whereas others have simply said, "Whoops. That one is a goner. Try again next time." So, lovely frog parents, do you have any suggestions on what I should do? For the record, I have been changing about 1/4 of the water in the tank with natural spring water every two days and do a full water change every week. And so far, that was working very well until this happened with one of my tadpoles. Now I am unsure. Should I change that routine? As for a description, this tadpole only has one of its small back legs so far and other places I have checked have said when tadpoles exhibit this behavior, they will "bloat," which I have not noticed.
Okay, the second tadpole gathering my concern is a little harder to explain. This tadpole is bigger. Like, bigger than the rest. I think the more correct term may be froglet? I believe it has all of its legs, but is not breathing air just yet. And the reason I say it is bigger than the rest is because it is just simply that. Bigger. It is having no problems swimming or anything, but it just looks.... weird. For example, it's body is different. It kind of looks normal until you look closer and see that it kind of has this clear, almost gelatinous looking case over its body. I will post a picture if needed, which probably will be needed, because I probably sound a little crazy trying to describe it. This tadpole has pretty much always looked bigger and gelatinous the whole time and I only waited this long to post, because I had talked to my local pet store owner about it, and she said it was fine and was simply the "special child," but not to worry about it.
What do you guys think? Absolutely any information regarding my issues is highly appreciated and I will gladly attempt to answer your questions as well as I can, but I am only a beginner frog owner. Thanks!
I'm not an expert, but as far as the one that won't stay under the water goes, I've read that tadpoles sometimes get that problem when they ingest air while feeding. Do you use floating food? The article (wish I could find it again) suggested you could try to prevent the problem by using food that sinks, even though that makes it harder to clean the tank.
Other than that I don't know what to tell you. Good luck I guess.
