I have had a red toad for a year now and still am unsure of what she/he is. It was found in southern Ohio. I can take more photos if needed. I think it is a bufo americanus but want to be sure so I can breed it. (Her I think.) He lives with a green tree frog. They don't bother each other but I think the toad is picking up on the tree frog techniques.
First things first, and this is a big thing newcomers seem to do, and I made this mistake at first too; please, don't mix frog species. A toad should have it's own tank, and the tree frog should have it's own. But all that aside for right now, I do believe your right, it is probably and eastern american toad. (Bufo bufo americanus)
"Look on the wall behind you. Look at that little girl's face. I know you've seen it. But you know what she's never going to be able to see? She's never going to be able to see the simple wonder of a leaf in her hand. Because there's not going to be any trees. Now you think about that."
