Hi everyone! I just got the cutest little pixie frog that we have named, with the help of my nephew, Pickle. He seems to be settling in well and has eaten a few crickets. I just wanted to clarify a few things to make sure I'm doing it right. I read over the care sheet on this and several other websites. From what I can gather earth worms are an ideal staple for adults, but since my guy is still pretty little, maybe 2-3" across, is there a smaller worm that is good? When my bearded dragons were smaller I would feed them repti-worms (black soldier fly larvae) would that be good for this guy too? Also, is the 'rule' that food should be smaller than the space between their eyes apply to frogs? Also, I found the feeding and supplement schedule listed in one of the forums here, I would assume that it would be good for Pickle since there were no species specifications on the thread?
This is his current set up, it is a 20 gallon long. I am planning to add more plants, the one in the corner is live and was considering adding more live plants. This one is in a pot so if he rearranges that will be fine. I also got one of those wooden half logs to add somewhere. Also, I will be upgrading his water bowl when needed. Is there anything missing? There is a heat pad underneath on the left side. Also, I got more substrate to add so he can burrow more.
Here is a close up of his adorable mug when I first got him home.
I have no idea if it's male or female. Any thoughts? It doesn't really matter to me but would be nice to know.
Any advice or tips are more than welcome! Thanks for checking us out!
try to use earthworms bc ive heard they dont like red worms....red worms are a bit smaller but give off a cemical taste so they frog doesnt really like it....but for the earth worms i would cut them in half and feed halves to the frog....ur baby frog should be able to consume 4-8 pieces easily and be fine....the rule of of feeding is feed for 15 mins as much as they will eat and u will be fine...i would invest in a dubia roach colony if this one turns out to be male bc they can eat quite a bit of food and will become kinda costly to feed ur frog...ur setup looks fine but u should move the heat pad from under to the side...and make sure the temps are usually around 80 degrees...if u have problems keeping that temp, a heat lamp with a 50 watt heat red lamp will easily do the job for u....and as for male or female...its still too early too tell..maybe in like 2-3 months u will know![]()
Ok, I will give earthworms a try! Do these need to be specially ordered or are bait worms ok? Thanks for the suggestions!
i wouldnt buy them from a bait store....some of them have a kind of dye in it that can be harmful to ur frog...but i always get mine from walmart at the fishing section and many ppl on here can vouch that those are ok to use...ive used them plenty b4![]()
Bait shop worms are fine. Like Habeeb stated, avoid the dyed ones. You can tell the difference very easily. Besides, if you tell the employee at the bait shop you need non-dyed worms, they'll take care of you. Otherwise, they are the same worms that Walmart has.
