Default 5 little Bufo Alvarius Toadlings added to the family

    Dear Ones,
in this thread I keep you updated on the development of our new family members, 5 little Bufo Alvarius toadlings, captive breeds from south germany. Bought from a vendor in Hannover. Don't know if its allowed to post a link to the site, so please mods delete if so:
The toads come from here: Bufo alvarius - Colorado Kröte DNZ | Kröten & Unken | Amphibien | Tierbestand | Terra-Exotica
They still have 50+ toadlings, if someone from Europe is interested.

    So here we go:

nice addition to you family, P.O. they will take a lot of feeding over their life time, do you plan to breed them in due course?

No, wasn't planning that with my adults, too.
It's already so much responsibility to raise these 5 little guys, I don't want to see hundreds of tadpoles or little toadlings die, which they do even if you put super efforts in. That would be too much, and the costs would be crazy. Cause you're right I'm seeing hundreds of Euros coming for those alone, plus the three big ones I already care for.

Babies look nice. Do monitor they all eat well; saw one repeatedly missing it's target. Like the smart one at the end that jumps one cardboard and scares the crickets into feeding areas for benefit of all the toads .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

You can bet I carefully watch that, they weren't finished when I took the video, afterwards I left them for 30 mins in the dark and only few crickets were left. All toadies had filled bellies instead :-)

Jesus, they are so unbelievable cute, it hurts :-)

    They are growing like crazy!
Two are ahead of the others, all get enough food, I carefully watch this. It's the natural selection, "survival of the fittest".

New videos will be uploaded to the youtube channel, too.

    They are gorgeous!

I've always wished to get on of these but they require crazy heating, don't they? These guys are so much prettier then the Cane toads ;p

It's freezing outside, so yes, I have to heat the room both viv's are in. Constantly.
Daytime temperature is 30Degrees overall and in the mid 30's under the spots.
So it's definately one of the more cost intensive hobbies

Pics from Friday. Yesterday I visited Hamm Expo and bought another two little Toadies. I though if I can take care of 5 then 2 more is no problem. Will maybe need to give 2 or 3 away when they reach maturity in a year, since 10 might be a bit too much for my vivarium. The new ones are really small, like the 5 when I got them a month ago. But they are healthy and doing good. (not on the pix though)

    Picture update!
The Toads are now almost 4 months old. Be awre that two of them are smaller cause they were added from Hamm Expo 2 weeks ago. Same breeder but different vendor. All from the same stash of eggs though.

    Have fun.

Also new videos on my YT channel:

Those are really awesome toads!!!! I am sooo jealous.. been trying to get my hand on those for a lonnnngg time!!! At some point there was a guy selling em but was asking for wayyyy overprice!! Like over 150$ ea..

There is a way to legally have them without CB but no one seems to bother doing it in the US.
AFAIK, collecting egg masses isn't illegal. So bring a bunch o eggs home then hatch em then voila! Legal to sell them!

Anyone in the US willing to do that, lemme know Then it's only a matter of shipping them near the border where I can bring em in... Buffalo, Watertown, Syracuse...

Definitely the most interesting toad out there IMO

    I have a question,

I was wondering if Aquarium sand is ok to use? I buy the sand that is silicate free

I would advise against using sand as it is undigestible and when the toads eat they will swallow some and become impacted. Even if toads are fed outiside tank if fungus gnats or other bugs get in the toads will try to get them (no matter how impervious you think your tank is too invasion, its not, trust me) and will swallow some anyway. Its best to use a digestible substrate like coco fiber.
