Hello All:
I have loved frogs since I was a small child. Years ago, I found out about the South American Horned frogs like Certophylis Ornata ("PacMan") and was excited.
Their care and feeding only on live food, and the high casualty rate as mostly juveniles and imported froglets being sold, put me off to get some, so I only have the easy to care for African Dwarf Aquatic Frogs.
Any tips and advise for: where to buy a mature (or at least not juvenile!) horned frog, how to obtain and manage live food if one does not want insects or mice in the house, and the setup of a good environment are appreciated. So far I found that the only shop that occasionally has some juveniles is the East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley, and that most Reptile and Amphibian shows are in Southern California and have no horned frogs.
I am located in the San Francisco bay area. I have a deck where I might be able to keep live food if its can withstand the temperature variation.
I am open to your advise and any useful links or places to buy the frogs or live food, as well as any alternatives to live food.
With Kind Regards,
Jon
Most that you find now will be captive bred, and if obtained from a reputable source will have a low mortality rate, as long as you keep their environment and parameters within the guidelines indicated in the care sheet.
As for the not wanting to keep insects in the house, that's a bit of a tough one. There is a product out there that you mix with water and it becomes a dough that they can eat if you tong train them, but I don't know how good it is for them overall.
Lastly, even though most reptile shows won't indicate much about having pacmans, there tend to be vendors that have at least a few in a variety of colors and ages.
