Thread: UVB light

    Default UVB light

    Do you use UVB light for your pacman frogs?
    I treated my frog food dusted with calcium/D3 twice a week. But the vet found his bone structure not very good from X-ray and asked me to treat frog with UVB. Do you think it's helpful?

    I would not use uvb as it can harm the frog, we actually just had a discussion on wether our not to use uvb for frogs and since pacmans are more nocturnal I wouldn't use uvb. I would keep supplementing, and do calcium every other day (correct me if i'm wrong).

    Yes 5%uvb is used for treating MBD in combination with meds and proper diet if your vet warned you after seeing xrays it must be the case. And the frog can't be albino.

    However in order to get your more helpful advise i need to know more about the condition, see pic of the frog from top and front, know a bit of history, what was happening, how did it look, why you took him to a vet, what was prescribed.
    Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

    Check expiration date on your CA/D3 bottle, just in case .
    Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

    I understand for Pacman frogs UVB index is zero.
    Exo Terra : Exo Terra UVB Bulb Index
    1.1.0 Xenopus laevis //Baculum extradentatum
    //Shelfordella tartara // Grillus bimaculatus
    //Blaberus craniifer //Achatina fulica

    They don't need UVB. It can be mildly beneficial for about 4 hours a day, but as far as I know there isn't anything out there that says they actually priduce vitamin D3 from UVB radiation. You can give it a go and see if it helps. Most are only effective up 12" away from the substrate so make sure it isn't a very bright CFL.
