    Default Opinions on Feeding Fish

    Hi!
I know not to feed feeder fish as they carry many diseases but I am curious about one thing. I have been breeding guppies for a while now and don't keep all the fry. I normally result to culling them. Can I feed these fry to Edgar? These frys parents were also born and raised with me. Thanks!

I still wouldn't feed them as it is possible that they still have parasites etc.

I breed guppies too, but mainly because I use the fry to feed baby/newborn garters... How would you feed the fry to a pac with them being so small? I'd say you probably wouldn't have to worry about parasites if you're keeping them well, but it's not a 100% guarantee. Honestly, seems like more trouble than it's worth.

As far as feeding fish in general, I feed my pac silversides from time to time and she loves them.

Unless you have capability to check your guppies for parasites, there is a risk involved. Sometimes our immune system has the upper hand and a pathogen will just remain suppressed until conditions change. You could treat your whole tanks with meds for worms, protozoans, etc. and reduce the risk there are bugs in your fish future generations as feeders. Still; the fact that a fish or any creature looks disease free does not mean it is .

I wonder if freezing works the same way for the fish as for rodents. I think it's 3 months is considered enough to kill any parasites in rodents (and apparently in some hunted meats for humans according to a friend of mine who hunts lol)
