I've said it before and I'll say it again: frogs do not need UVB in captivity. There is some observational (not scientific research) data that exposure to low UVB appears to enrich their lives same as live plants, varied food items, proper temperature and humidity cycles, etc. They do need CA/D3 and vitamins! UVB exposure is as far as any research I've come across not a replacement for supplements.

If anyone has access to scientific research that says otherwise; then do provide the reference so we all can learn. All further posts should be a respectful discussion or I'll take whatever measures are needed to prevent a foolish flame war at FF. Thank you !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

THANK YOU UncleChester for that intelligent post!! I'm so busy with my other things in life let alone putting up foot notes on my website searches. I do not sad to say know how to get my links posted into a forum. I've never been on a forum, blog or anything interactive before. I have no kids or friends to teach me proper internet surfing protocol. I shall write down the http addresses from now on. I do WANT TO HELP by sharing . But like I told Amy I'm not getting paid to footnote every finding.. I'm SORRY I get excited when being challenged on something I've personally studied for 10 years in college and now with a nice Macbook Pro I'm in heaven…. The web is amazing. And don't believe everything you read on it either!!! I can't help ranting , I'm a LEO !!! HELLO ! Thanks again for the gentle frog like scolding UVB SPECTRUM OBSESSED Frog Momma….

Yes you are partly correct. I read in many resources on captive amphibians specifically Hyla Versacolor (Eastern Grey Tree Frogs ) in captivity do not require AS MUCH UV RAYS because as you said they are in semi shade arboreal environment. HOWEVER you are WRONG they must have SOME UVB rays esp. indoor captivity…. PERIOD. I' m using scientific facts in direct resources regarding CAPTIVE FROGS .. Please look up the death rate prior to the discovery by zookeepers world wide that lack of proper UVB RAYS esp. was killing off exhibits of captive reptiles and AMPHIBIANS. FROGS are AMPHIBIANS!!! DON'T GUESS DO YOU RESEARCH !!!!! In fact it is not advised to give these frogs VIT D3 as a supplement as they do not utilize it unless produced by UVB exposure. When I find that exact resources again, I will put it on a post for all to see!!!!!!. I'm not getting paid to write my thesis paper on public forum. SCIENTIFIC SKEPTICS DRIVE ME NUTS!!!! It was advised to use calcium powder w/out D3 in FACT!!! ALERT!!!! WOULD THE RETIRED BRONX ZOO HERPITOLOGIST PLEASE CHERP IN AND HELP ME WITH ALL THESE SKEPTICS ON VITAMIN D3 IN CAPTIVE AMPHIBIANS…. THANKYOU DR.??? You are on this frog forum somewhere. I just can' figure out how to look up previous posts????????????????

Please do. Your claim of 'scientific facts' should be easy for you to support, and asking you to provide some links is pretty fair.

There's a search feature in the top right of the forum.

In the meantime you should also know that writing in all capital letters is considered shouting on the internet and comes off as rude.

Yes Dear, I know they are nocturnal. "That's elementary my dear Watson" The Moonlight bulbs only enhances OUR HUMAN viewing pleasures!! With the added side effects ,benefits if you wish for the frogs, of mild UV-A ray exposure (appetite stimulation esp. important for new baby CAPTIVE born frogs) and secondly gentle heat source at night,. when I know for certain that living in a drafty 100 year plus farmhouse is not conducive to providing a stable comfortable temp. again esp. for BABY CAPTIVE BORN frogs. Not saying they cannot survive in lower that 70's. Just that they are more comfortable, therefor more apt to thrive. Period. If these little babies were wild born and or adult wild born captives that would make them all the more hardy. This is only my opinion as someone who has studied a lot on animal behavioral sciences and the like. I certainly do not know everything. YET! Just kidding you moderators of the frog forum. I do not use capital letters to shout, only to accentuate my meaning. I wonder why when the temps drop here even at night in the WI summertime that my local wild adult tree frogs are always under my 96 degree swim spa cover. Prey tell? Could it be possible that they ENJOY the moist heat ??? But of course they do…. "I think they know what their doin" better than any of us humans on this frog website !!! I'm SURE of it!! Thank for you input anyway !!! Frog Momma out….

I'm sorry, but i must have read and re-read this article twenty times, and did not see anything about these frogs absolutely needing uv exposure. Nor did
I see anything to indicate that you should not release morphling frogs into the wild

There are certain frogs that CAN benefit from UV and ubv rays. But mind you that these frogs are NOT nocturnal frogs. When frogs are nocturnal they don't get normal exposure to sun that a diurnal frog would get being in the sun all out part of the day. And the vitamin and supplement problem, vitamins and supplements are essential for any animal including frogs. Please consider how you respond to this post before you answer as it can offend people.

Franks post simply says that he has a wider variety of breeding results when they are exposed to NATURAL sun light, not that they benefit from it. And again, these frogs are diurnal frogs not nocturnal frogs.

The lighting is making them morph more quickly.
But it's not the lights... it's the warmth.
    Simple as that.

These tads? Tads in mid November?
Have they been positively identified as
    Gray Treefrog - Hyla versicolor
    or
    Cope's Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis)

Both of these species have a breeding season that peaks in late spring.

Could you post some photos. I would love to see them

I agree --- they should be released... as Amy mentioned "on a nice warm day"
into a small body of water.... ie a small pond or even a swamp

Betsy, everytime someone says that they have had years of experience with these amphibians you just negate it immediately. 4 Weeks of research and some experience does not negate 4+ years of experience and research. I would not release them unless you do it now since they will be so used up life in captivity, that they won't have any real hunting experience. They will need 10 gallons per frog minimum when they are adults, no matter what the size. Just because poison dart frogs are small should you put them in a 5 gallon tank? No, because size isn't always everything.

Betsy, im very supriprised nobody warned you yet. Consider this as your warning.

this forum is intended for sharing information, helping frogs and their owners. It is family friendly forum, therefore proper rules of communication apply.

You have a statement - get ready to prove it, providing scientific proof if asked. That is how we operate here, sharing and collecting information that will help develop the hobby as well as conservation efforts. Saying you have been doing research for 3 weeks, without providing scientific proof in a form you did is not okay. You came to get help, yet you don't respect people who are helping you. We all care here for frogs and wanting only the best for them, your behaviour is not helping it. Nobody knows everything and we always welcome every bit of proven information we can get, however we are not welcome what this thread has become.

I very strongly suggest you review our forum rules and terms of use before posting further. Frog Forum - FrogForum Terms of Use (Rules)

you have violated lot of them already. As I said earlier consider this as your warning.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
