I've been spending alot of time at my favorite toad catching spot, and it just occured to me now... these aren't normal american toads. I've been keeping track if the toads at Belly Deep Slough for years now, and I have never seen a toad, out of the thousands I do see, larger than an inch. My toad, Lola, whom I got from Belly deep slough, and whom I've had for three years, is just shy of 2 and a half inches. Are there dwarf american toads in Illinois?
"Look on the wall behind you. Look at that little girl's face. I know you've seen it. But you know what she's never going to be able to see? She's never going to be able to see the simple wonder of a leaf in her hand. Because there's not going to be any trees. Now you think about that."

Accoring to this they are in the north eastern range of the U.S. so they might be what you are finding. I hope this helps!
Cool! That means my Lola might just be a dwarf american toad. I always thought she was small for a female.
